Is the cooling fan working?
Also is the laptop in a confined space, on her lap or placed on an open desk. It could be restricted airflow.

My sister has a laptop and has told me that it gets too hot and shuts off, I am thinking it might be time to change the battery she has had it for a few years now but I would like second opinions.

Naw I told her when she first got it to keep it on a desk that is not full of shit lol. The fan is working but the comp gets hot and shuts off, I thought it might be the fan also but a few years ago I had a desktop that did the same and the power supply was the problem.

I would bet its dirt. Usually you can get to the fan/heat sink by removing the keyboard. You will be absolutely shocked my the size of the fuzz ball that is probably in there. You can probably find directions on the internet how to open up the particular model of the laptop. Then just get a can of compressed air and blow that crap out.

@US_Spurs_Fan sounds aboot right to me mate. i took at least a 1/4" layer of dust off my mates processor fan once. he said that his system was making loads of racket. it was no surprise to hear that he had NEVER cleaned it in it's 4 year life span. poor old pc : (
@Javi if she is worried aboot opening it up, she should take it to a shop and ask the guy to give it a proper good cleaning.
