I get a lot of it but it is quite complex. The basics are straightforward, you get 4 goes to make 10 yards or the opposition gets the ball. Get in the end zone with the ball to score.

The problem comes in with all the different penalties, what might be perfectly legal for 1 player to do is not for another. It usually depends on what position they are playing. To add another level of complication the same player can do something 2 plays in a row and it will be a foul in 1 but not in the other. Depends on the situation, ie a run play or a pass play.

But the basics are easy enough. The most important thing you need to know is that the Redskins, despite recent seasons results, are the greatest team!!!

Wish I had a pound for every time someone said that.

The padding (hard plastic) can be used to inflict extra damage in the 'tackle'. I say tackle, you can get away with more of a hit in American Football than rugby. The most common problem I had was someone putting their shoulder pad or helmet in my kidneys. Saying that I probably should have had pads on there but never worry

In American Football pretty much anyone on either team can be hit to some extend whether they have the ball or not, sometimes in the back. There is a lot more contact in American Football than rugby, I think thats the main reason for the protective equipment.

Its all about sponsors and tv money. When the games are that long you can have the BBQ going lots of beer and the big screen on and wander in and out of the house and not miss anything. I do watch most games but it can get a little boring at times.

It's called 'football' because iut's just the Americans version of our football. Rugby, American Football, Ossie ball - All adapted versions of our football. I do enjoy a good game of Rogbeh! I play for the school, although we havn't actually had a game yet. If you want to get to understand the rules of NFL abit more, just buy Madden 08, I'm sure that'll clear it all up for ya.

haha, me and my brother used to play the older Madden on the first playstation.
-didn't help me too much with the rules though.

      Painfully boring to watch.

here are a few pointers for those of you interested in american football...

1.) the new england patriots are the most evil, treacherous, cheating whelps of the league.

2.) adrian peterson (a running back for my beloved minnesota vikings) is the single greatest running back of this generation and possibly the last few generations as well. you dont need to understand the sport to understand his greatness. a simple youtube search should suffice.

3.) no one knows why it is called football. kicking field goals and punting are certainly not the desired outcomes of a drive.

4.) fantasy american football is infinitely more entertaining than other fantasy sports and results in millions of hours of lost labor across the country in the course of a season.

i will gladly answer any and all serious questions on the topic of the sport for those curious =)

Something to remember: The NFL gimps defenses in hopes of creating offensive-happy, high scoring games.
