    • MEMORIES OF WHITE HART LANE - TOTTENHAM IN THE NORTH BANK

After the despair of having an FA CUP FINAL appearance snatched away by a last gasp penalty in the 1981 SEMI FINAL against WOLVES at HILLSBOROUGH, it was off to HIGHBURY for the replay...

This game I remember very well. I had never seen so many SPURS at a game. They were everywhere. HIGHBURY was heaving, and the famous NORTH BANK was packed with thousands of SPURS. It was fantastic, and a vision I will NEVER forget.

Midway through the first half, GARTH CROOKS burst through the WOLVES defense, and SMASHED a low drive into the corner of the net at the NORTH BANK end. HIGHBURY erupted, the NORTH BANK SPURS (never thought I would ever say that) were going crazy. GARTH CROOKS added a second, before RICKY VILLA unleashed fury on WOLVES with a 20 yard ROCKET into the top corner for 3-0.

I knew then that "SPURS WERE ON THEIR WAY TO WEMBLEY"....

It was one of the most amazing feelings EVER at the final whistle. SPURS had done it, we were on our way to the FA CUP FINAL. The place was going MENTAL.

I was one of the thousands of SPURS in the NORTH BANK that night. I will NEVER forget the experience...

I remember Hoddle making a fair tackle in the penalty area near the final whistle and a penalty being awarded, my heart sunk, we were robbed.

My dad got us tickets for the replay at Highbury. I was 9 years old and very excited.
The ground was packed, I remember my dad finding a wooden box for me to stand on. We were pitch side by the corner flag near the goal where Villa bent the ball top corner.

I knew we were going to Wembley but was unaware of the magnitude of the win in our rivals ground.

I saw grown men cry that night and learnt many a swear word.

It was our first season ticket that year and I felt I belonged to something very special. Spurs were destined for the cup. My love affair with Spurs had truly begun.

I remember it well, it was my first and only pitch invasion after the final whistle, as a young boy I rember the horror of seeing a grown man urinate in the centre circle at Highbury and then getting slapped by a copper, yes, slapped!

I remember being in the Leppings Lane end at Hillsborouogh for the first game and it was carnage with kids and smaller blokes being pulled out and moved to the corner for safety, we all know what happened in there some years later. Clive Thomas was the mug that gave Wolves the penalty.

I was in the Spurs section at the clock end for the replay, gave up my North Bank ticket to my brother as he wasn't a regular at games, great night. The final and replay war part of an amazing spell of 7 Wembley visits in the space of a couple of years.

I remember the train journey home from Hillsborough. Thanks to Clive Thomas all the supporters trains were sent to London without us as British Rail had not allowed for the possibility of extra time. The supporters trains went back to London empty and we were effectively kettled at Sheffield station and unable to buy anything to eat. Eventually a train got us back to Kings Cross at about 1 in the morning. The only place open was KFC and it was the biggest queue they ever had.
