• The Olympic Stadium - pros and cons

Nothing has divided opinion among our supporters since Sugar's takeover in '91 than the enigma that is the Olympic stadium. Some are for it, some are against it. I myself was at first staunchly against the idea but it is coming round to me now, Haringey council has done nothing to help us regenerate their area for them, all we have heard from David Lammy is sob stories of how Spurs have broken promises and how disgraceful it is that we are even considering moving when he and his cronies haven't contributed a single penny to the project. There has to be some give and take in this scheme, we are regenerating a deprived area of London for them and the ungrateful sods are sitting back and expecting us to do all the work for them, pathetic if you ask me.

I am going to weigh up the pros and cons of this move in my opinion

      PROS

We are building a 60,000 seater stadium, more than enough to satisfy the 25,000 season ticket waiting list that we have

Fantastic transport links to the stadium both overground and underground so our fans will be able to get to and from the ground without much hassle

We are building this ground near Canary Wharf, in the heartland of corporate London, which will attract rich investors to the club

We aren't going to have a running track around the stadium as first feared, if we are to win the bid to the Olympic Stadium we will be as close to the pitch ad we were in the NDP

The stadium we intend to build is basically the stadium of the NDP, the Kop End and all

A fantastic football fan catchment area in working class East London, we could even put West Ham out of business

      CONS

The obvious fact that we are leaving all the history of WHL and Tottenham behind, the glory days of Billy Nick etc

Dissident fans may break away from THFC and form a rebel club, a Wimbledon scenario

We may have to change our name to Stratford Hotspur, hopefully not

We will become hypocrites as we have always made fun of Arsenal because they moved from Woolwich to Highbury over 100 years ago, they will have our turf, North London, all to themselves, they will have won

Our great rivalry with Arsenal may fade away as there is hardly any locality anymore, a terrible shame, our main rivals may become West Ham

In conclusion I think as long as we get a good quality football stadium to satisfy the needs for gate money and fans being able to see their team, with good facilities outside the ground (museum, shop etc) and their is a good atmosphere at games I am not worried about where we play our football (as long as we are in London). I am actually rather excited about the prospect of getting a new stadium as the club needs to become modern and forward thinking.

      COYS!!

        @woody - great article

Another pro is the pending introduction of new UEFA rules where transfers must be closely aligned to revenue.

So, a 36K stadium means less money for transfers compared to a 60K stadium.

My view is, we should never rule out any option, whether that it to stay at WHL or move to the Olympic Stadium.

Whatever happens, I would still support them.

@bradders - what? If we go to Stratford we are knocking down the OS and building a similar design to the NDP ... hardly fook all .........

I'm sorry, but some of the pros and cons you have stated are unfounded. I will highlight them below.

        PROS:

Firstly, The transport links were already planned and put in place for the NDP in Tottenham! 144 buses an hour to serve the area. Besides, the only transport link Stratford has that Tottenham has not is DLR!....ok, maybe London City airport too, but that's it!!

Stratford has a tube station. Tottenham has a tube station.
Stratford has a bus station. Tottenham has a bus station.
Stratford has a national rail station. Tottenham has a national rail station.
Why don't we just plonk the stadium in Liverpool Street if we're all so bothered about transport links!

Secondly, you talk about 'catchment' fans in East London. We have more in North London!
This is a no-brainer in both senses of the word (figure it out). And I thought you wanted the club to attract more fans around the world...? Can't do that by moving within the same country...

Thirdly, I don't want some oligarch infecting the club with endless amounts of cash from the comfort of his Canary Wharf office thank you very much. I don't want to be Man City. This is what we've been avoiding and suddenly you want to buy into it? Spurs do things the right way and it should stay like that.

        CONS:

WeAreN17 made it explicitly clear that they WILL NOT form a breakaway club if Spurs win the bid.

We know we need a new stadium. Everybody accepts that, but not the choice of location in Stratford. It was bad enough surrendering the naming rights! I'm not going to stand here watching our club become some corporate toy in the ever growing gambling den we call the Premier League. Avoiding Stratford IS the way forward!

@ weirdave - mate I appreciate your commitment to N17 and in my heart I feel the same but if you want a reasoned debate you have to accept the advantages of both sides:

Transport: N17 has the overground at WHL and Northumberland Park (both small stations in need of refurbishment) it has two tube stations 1.5m away.
Transport: Stratford has the International Rail Terminal, a main line large overground station, an underground station and the DLR all within 250m.

Catchment area - The whole world is our target audience makes no difference if we are in London N17 or London Stratford there are still >6b people in the world, >60m in the UK and over 7m in London - these are our target customers ... on a local level Haringey is 224k Newham is 249k ....

Canary Wharf - This is not about a new owner this is about attracting corporate money through sponsorship, box owners, high price tickets. It is very difficult to attract this business to N17 new stadium or not, in your words 'a no brainer' to attract this money to the Olympic Park.

I want to stay at the NDP as much as you but the only way this will happen is if the OS site goes to another bidder. To try and make a business argument for the NDP over the Stratford site is just pointless .....

Unlikely. That's pretty hard to do whilst reducing capacity by 20,000 seats.

If we do move there I would want Spurs to tear it down. The OS is a mediocre design at best, a big hunk of concrete. The OS transport links are about the only thing that is superior to NDP. Fan experience namely environment outside the stadium would be far superior to OS.
